Tips on Selecting a Wedding Photographer

We strongly recommend that you talk to more than one photographer before making such an important decision. There are some important questions to ask any photographer that you trust with your wedding day.

1.                   Look for a studio with a solid reputation. How long have they been in business?

2.                   Is the photographer a full-time professional or someone who does weddings on weekends just to generate extra cash?

3.                   Is the photographer a Certified Professional Photographer or hold other photographic degrees like the Professional Photographers of America’s Master of Photography or Photographic Craftsman degrees?

4.                   Are you able to meet the photographer to see if you are comfortable with him/her?

5.                   Is the sample wedding album they show as an example of their work a complete wedding? Does it tell a story?  Even an amateur could put together an attractive album make up of a few select images from several weddings, but consistent quality from start to finish should be of concern.

6.                   What type of album does the photographer use? Is it vinyl or real leather? Do the photographs slip in or are they  bound into it like a book?

7.                   Are the prints protected with a lacquer spray?

8.                   Is retouching included to remove blemishes and soften facial lines? Does the photographer correct problems such as eyeglass glare?

9.                   Can the photographer create a formal studio portrait?

10.              Does the photographer use an assistant the day of wedding?

11.              How much photographic coverage is included?

12.              What is coverage going to cost?  The album? When are payments due?

Remember, anyone can take a picture and have it printed. But with photography, you’re paying for the photographer’s talent to create and image that is flattering and storytelling. Few people have that ability.

Photography cannot be purchased over the phone. It’s something you must see to appreciate. Take your time, look around and consider this life-time investment carefully.

A wedding is a very precious time.
